The short answer: 30 years and beyond, under normal conditions of use. The long answer depends on three factors: the material, routine maintenance, and winter care.
The material makes the difference
Not all garden fountains are the same. A plastic or synthetic resin fountain tends to degrade within 5–10 years due to UV rays and temperature fluctuations. A terracotta fountain is fragile in frost. Cementitious agglomerate made with Carrara marble grit occupies a different category: it is a technical material specifically designed for permanent outdoor use, lighter than monolithic marble and with superior frost resistance thanks to white cement RCK 52.5.
Routine maintenance: what to do every year
The lifespan of a garden fountain depends largely on three simple operations to be carried out regularly.
1. Impregnating treatment
Apply a transparent impregnating agent over the entire surface (acrylic varnish every 4 years, or water-based varnish every year). This treatment creates a barrier against moisture and slows the natural ageing of the surface.
2. Pump cleaning
Regularly add an anti-limescale and anti-algae product to the fountain water. Limescale that builds up on the rotor is the main cause of premature pump failure. A pump in good condition lasts for years; a pump encrusted with limescale fails within a few months. Italpark produces a specific product: ART. CH02 — Anti-algae chlorine powder 1kg. Also clean the pump rotor once a year with a small brush and an anti-limescale product, or with vinegar.
3. Water level check
The pump must never run without water. In summer, when evaporation is more intense, check the water level at least twice a week. A pump running dry will burn out within minutes.
Winter care: the most important step
Frost is the main enemy of a garden fountain. Water that freezes inside the pipes or the basin rim expands and can cause cracks even in highly resistant materials.
When the temperature drops steadily below 3°C:
- Turn off the pump and remove it from the fountain
- Completely drain the basin, pipes, and rim of all residual water
- Store the pump in a dry place, sheltered from frost
- Cover the fountain with a waterproof sheet
- In areas with harsh winters, apply an additional waterproofing treatment with ART. SI05 — Water-repellent solution
A fountain properly prepared for winter will not suffer frost damage, even at temperatures of -15°C.
How long do Italpark fountains last in practice?

Cases of premature damage that do occur are almost always attributable to:
- Pump burned out due to lack of water
- Frost cracks caused by failure to drain the fountain for winter
- Surface degradation due to the use of aggressive cleaning products
