The Baigneuse by Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain (1710–1795) stands as one of the finest expressions of French Neoclassical sculpture. Completed around 1767 and today preserved at the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the work depicts a young woman caught in a moment of quiet intimacy — her posture graceful and contemplative, her drapery falling with studied naturalism. Allegrain, a pupil of Guillaume Coustou and brother-in-law of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, brought to this figure a delicate sensibility that bridges the elegance of the Rococo with the measured restraint of Neoclassicism. The statue became celebrated for its serene femininity and the refined treatment of the human form.
