Venus Callipygia

The Venus Callipyge — whose name derives from the Greek for “beautiful buttocks” — is one of the most celebrated sculptures of antiquity. The original, housed in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples, is a Roman marble copy dating to the 1st century BC, itself derived from a lost Hellenistic Greek prototype believed to originate around the 3rd–2nd century BC. The figure depicts a partially draped goddess who glances back over her shoulder, lifting her garment in a gesture that combines sensuality with graceful self-awareness.
