Girl with a shell

The figure of a young woman holding a shell is one of the most enduring motifs in Western sculpture, deeply rooted in the iconography of Venus and the sea. From ancient Greek and Roman reliefs to Renaissance fountains and Baroque garden statuary, the shell has long symbolised birth, fertility, and the boundary between the earthly and the divine. This graceful archetype — a maiden poised in quiet contemplation, shell cradled in her hands — became a defining image of classical garden art across the great European villas and formal gardens of the 17th and 18th centuries, where allegorical figures were chosen to evoke harmony between nature and beauty.
