Venus Canefore

The Canephora — from the Greek kanephoros, "basket-bearer" — is one of the most elegant female archetypes of ancient Greek sculpture. Young women depicted carrying sacred baskets (kanoun) on their heads were central figures in religious processions honoring deities such as Athena and Demeter. The sculptural type became widely celebrated in the classical and Hellenistic periods, later inspiring Roman copies and Renaissance interpretations that associated the figure with grace, devotion, and feminine beauty. The pose — upright, composed, with one arm gently raised — conveys a timeless sense of serene dignity that has made the Canephora a beloved subject in garden and villa decoration throughout the centuries.
